How to Study Organic Chemistry for the MCAT: A Week-by-Week Plan

Organic chemistry only makes up a slice of the MCAT, but a scattered approach to it wastes time you don't have. Here's a realistic week-by-week structure.

Organic chemistry is one of the smaller content areas on the MCAT, folded into the Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological Systems section alongside general chemistry, biochemistry, physics, and biology. Because it's a minority slice of one section, it's tempting to either ignore it until late in your prep or re-study it exactly the way you did in your college course. Both approaches tend to waste time. The MCAT tests organic chemistry differently than a typical college exam does — it leans on passage-based reasoning and functional-group recognition far more than on reproducing named reactions from memory.

A better approach is to treat MCAT organic chemistry as its own short, focused unit inside your overall study plan, sequenced deliberately rather than studied in whatever order your old textbook happens to cover it.

Week 1: Rebuild the Foundational Concepts

Start with the concepts that show up as building blocks in almost every later topic: molecular structure and bonding, functional groups, polarity and intermolecular forces, acid-base chemistry, and isomerism (including stereochemistry). Don't try to memorize reactions yet — the goal in week one is being able to look at a structure and immediately identify its functional groups, predict relative polarity, and reason about acidity and basicity.

Week 2: Reaction Patterns, Not Reaction Lists

Move into substitution, elimination, addition, and oxidation-reduction reactions — but organize your review around the pattern of electron movement rather than a list of named reactions to memorize. Ask "what kind of nucleophile or electrophile is this, and what would it attack?" instead of "what reaction is this problem testing?" This is the single biggest shift students need to make coming from a coursework mindset into an MCAT mindset.

Week 3: Passage-Based Practice

Once the concepts and reaction patterns feel solid, shift almost entirely to MCAT-style passages and discrete questions. This is where most of the actual skill-building happens — reading an unfamiliar experimental scenario, extracting the chemistry that matters, and ignoring the details that don't. Review every wrong answer by asking whether you missed the concept, misread the passage, or made a reasoning error under time pressure. Each of those has a different fix.

Week 4: Integrate and Time Yourself

In the final week, stop studying organic chemistry in isolation. Mix it back into full-length, timed practice sections so you're applying it under the same conditions as test day, alongside biochemistry, general chemistry, and physics content. Organic chemistry questions on the real exam rarely show up as a clean, isolated block — they're interleaved with everything else.
