Part 2: The MCAT organic chemistry content you need to know for the exam

“Master the essential MCAT concepts and take your understanding to the next level with our practice questions and detailed answers.

Fundamentals of Organic Chemistry

The thought of organic chemistry scares you? You’re not alone. The subject encompasses a broad range of concepts, from electron movement to functional groups and organic structures, and can require memorizing complex reactions. But have no fear! The organic chemistry content covered on the MCAT is often less extensive than what you may have encountered in a college course.
The guide will demystify the subject by introducing you to the fundamental concepts you need to know to excel on the test. By the end, you’ll be well-prepared to tackle more advanced topics in our other guides. Throughout the Chemistry Guide, we highlight key terms in bold and list them at the end for easy reference. Plus, you’ll find practice questions designed to mimic the MCAT to help you test your understanding.
So, forget your fears, and let’s dive in! This guide is the first step towards mastering organic chemistry and acing the MCAT.”

Isomers

“Isomers, compounds with the same chemical formula but different atomic arrangements, can have vastly different properties. Keep this in mind while studying chemical reactions and creating drugs, as the wrong isomer could lead to dangerous side effects.

Our guide takes you on a trip through the different types of isomers, including examples and naming conventions. We have highlighted Key terms in bold. There are practice questions at the end, designed to mimic the MCAT to test your understanding.

Ready to tackle isomers? Let’s begin!”

Important functional groups

A deep understanding of functional groups is essential to mastering organic chemistry. These clusters of atoms give molecules their unique chemical properties and play a crucial role when interacting with one another.
The vast array of functional groups can seem daunting, but don’t fret – this Chemistry Guide will review the major functional groups covered on the MCAT. As you work through it, it will be most helpful to determine if these functional groups are electrophilic or nucleophilic.
The MCAT exam will rarely test you on Nomenclature and molecular structure. But it tests your knowledge of electrophilicity, nucleophilicity, and electronegativity trends.
Test your knowledge with several AAMC-style practice questions at the end of this guide. Let’s dive in and unlock the secrets of functional groups!”

Reactions and separations

“Organic chemistry is not just about understanding reactions but also mastering the techniques to purify and separate products from reactants. It’s where the rubber meets the road, where the real test of a chemist’s skill lies.
Here we cover everything you need to know about reactions and separation techniques for the MCAT. From identifying critical reagents to mastering high-yield experimental Techniques, you’ll be ready for anything the test throws your way. Here, the key terms are highlighted boldly for easy reference, and practice questions are at the end to test your understanding.
Ready to tackle reactions and separations like a pro? Let’s get started!”

Spectroscopy

“How do scientists determine the structure of a mysterious molecule?
While we can’t see them with the naked eye, then how do we confirm their identities? The key lies in spectroscopy and other advanced experimental techniques.
We’ll dive into two of the most vital forms of spectroscopy: infrared (IR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. From fundamental principles to interpreting the data, you’ll be ready to ace the MCAT by the end. While you may have learned about these techniques in college, the level of depth required for the MCAT is lower. The MCAT exam is a multiple-choice test. You won’t need to recall and produce information as you would in a lab course.
Are you ready to unlock the secrets of spectroscopy? Let’s get started!”

MCAT Organic Chemistry Practice Questions

Organic chemistry is a challenging subject for premeds, but now that you’ve conquered it, it’s time to focus on the MCAT. But how much of this daunting subject will come up on the exam?
The good news is organic chemistry won’t take up a significant portion of the exam. The MCAT will only ask you 6 to 12 Questions out of the total of 230 questions. It means that your study schedule should include a balance of both content and practice. To excel in organic chemistry Questions, you’ll need to understand how the AAMC writes questions.
We’ve designed practice passages for you to test your chemistry knowledge, with three MCAT-style Passages and five standalone questions. Each passage-based question will suggest what to review if you miss a question. So, relax, take a deep breath, and let’s get started! Good luck!”

Part 3: MCAT organic chemistry study strategies

Tip #1: Master the structure of functional groups like a pro

Imagine being able to draw an aldehyde with your eyes closed, just like you can recite the structure of an amino acid. This level of familiarity with organic chemistry functional groups is essential.

Tip #2: Learn the properties of functional groups so you can grasp how they react

Understanding the properties of each functional group is essential to solving organic chemistry problems without having to memorize specific reactions. Paying extra attention to the carbonyl-functional group works positively, as the MCAT often tests students on it.

Tip #3: Master yourself with commonly used experimental techniques like separations, purifications, and spectroscopy in organic chemistry

When you come across a practice question you miss, take the time to review it, jot down what you need to know, and study that information. This approach should be applied to all practice questions, not just those in organic chemistry, to ensure that you’re always on top of your game.”

 MCAT Organic Chemistry: Critical Reasoning

“When it comes to the MCAT Chemistry section, it’s all about critical reasoning. The AAMC has identified four Key skills, i.e., Scientific Inquiry and Reasoning Skills (SIRS), that you need to master to excel on the test. MCAT tests these skills across all the science sections, including Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological Systems, Biological and Biochemical Foundations of Living Systems, and Psychological, Social and Biological Foundations of Behavior.

Knowledge of Scientific Concepts and Principles:
This skill tests your ability to recall important science content.
Scientific Reasoning and Problem-Solving:
This skill assesses your ability to apply scientific knowledge to new situations and combine multiple content areas at-a-time.
Reasoning about the Design and Execution of Research:
This skill examines your ability to understand and analyze experimental methods, results, and research study conclusions.
Data-Based and Statistical Reasoning:
This skill tests your ability to understand and interpret data presented in graphs, tables, and figures and draw conclusions from them.”
